Today I want to talk to you about the essential Internet marketing tools you need to help you succeed online. This can be a difficult topic as what suits my business may not suit yours. Similarly, the skills that I have and the things I chose to do in my business will be different to yours.

The good news though is that there are most likely some common elements between the majority of successful businesses and between people that make good money online. Don’t take my word for it though. Some of these marketers are hugely successful – people like young millionaire Reed Floren, Bill McRea and UK duo Dave Nicholson and John Thornhill. Others in make-good-money may be slightly less successful but still make a living online.

One of the questions Peter asked all ten marketers was “what are the core Internet marketing tools that you use in your business and can’t do without?” The results were interesting. It didn’t seem to make any difference how successful or what type of online business each one had. There were some common tools they all used on a regular basis. These are

— a good auto-responder service (usually Aweber)

— a password manager program such as RoboForm (PC) or 1Password (MAc)

— an FTP program, usually FileZIlla

— a good html editor, usually NVU or Dreamweaver

— a means to collect payment, usually PayPal or Clickbank

That’s it. These were the  most common tools used by these marketers, regardless of the nature or size of their business, to make good money.

Sure, some used tools for specific purposes, such as Photoshop for graphics or more sophisticated Shopping Carts. But, the core tools were these simple and mostly free tools that require virtually no training or any complex skills. More complex tools and tasks were often outsourced and many confessed to being ignorant about how to use these tools anyway.

This is reassuring and good news for most people starting out online. The message here is you can build a successful online business with a core set of simple tools that enable you to create a web page, upload it to the Internet and collect payment. Simple as that.

If you want to make good money online where do you start? This is probably THE most asked question successful Internet marketers face. So what is the answer? Well, it depends on who you talk to! Of course, this does not help if you are looking for a quick answer on how to make good money.

Perhaps a clue lies in the work of Australian marketer Peter Downs’s work for his site called, would you believe, ‘make good money’. Most agreed that to succeed online you need a strong personal motivation that means you will not give up. The biggest myth of working online is ‘instant riches’. You need motivation, persistence and patience. Do you have that?

Next, what skills do you need to make good money online? Interestingly, most agreed that you actually do not need too many skills. One or two highly successful marketers confessed to being incapable of any kind of web design or SEO or keyword research. The important thing was to know what your skills are and to outsource the rest. Not try to do everything yourself. Naturally you need to know what skills are needed, to focus on those skills and to only do yourself what you are capable of doing.

Another interesting question was “if you had to start again what would you do?” The answers were unanimous. Build a subscriber list. All top marketers have a list and in their formative years online concentrated on building their list, often through Giveaway events and adswaps. Even when their businesses became established and lists grew into 10, 20, 50 or even 100,000 people the successful marketers still concentrated on building lists. This was regardless of the nature of their business.

So, if you want to start to make good money online then make sure you have a strong motivation, that you know what your skills are and don’t try to do everyting yourself and, in the early stages focus on building your subscriber base. Sounds simple!!

Berlin is one of the youngest european capitals. The first written mention about Berlin appeared in the year 1237. Nowadays Berlin is the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany. The two founding towns Cölln and Berlin affiliated in 1307 for a union. After riots, elector Friedrich II. declared the twin town his residence in 1451. In 1701, after elector Friedrich III had coronated himself as king Friedrich I in Prussia, Berlin rose to a Royal Capital and Residence Town. Numerous well-known buildings were designed then, his grandson Friedrich II (1740-1786) continued with the architectural redesign of the city, assisted by the famous architectKnobelsdorff. 1806-08 Napoleon’s troups occupied the city; after the victory of Leipzig the Quadriga, which was annexed by Napoleon, was returned to the Brandenburg Gate in 1814.

In the following decades, the splendid classicist buildings by Schinkel and the blossoming park areas by Lenné emerged. Since the middle of the century, Berlin’s economy boomed, the population grew rapidly. After 1871, when the city had become capital of the ‘Deutsches Reich’, the construction and economy boom even grew in the Gründerzeit(“founding era”), Berlin’s population exceeded one million. The heavy defeat of World War I as well as revolutionary riots caused a deep crisis of the Reich and its capital. Out of the riots the Republic was proclaimed in 1918. Despite the difficult economical situation and further riots, art and culture flourished during the twenties; innovative theatre productions, splendid film premieres, vivid vaudevilles and an uncomparable nightlife made Berlin the centre of the “Golden Twenties”. Hitler’s takeover in 1933 marked the beginning of the persecution of Jews, Communists, Homosexuals, Oppositionals and many more.

After the Nazi terror and the end of World War II the city was finally devastated in 1945. The four allies divided Berlin in four parts: the East was administered by the Soviet Union, the Southwest by the USA, the West by Great Britain and the Northwest by France. With the“Berlin-Blockade” in 1948, the city became object of the Soviet-American conflict; Americans and British supplied the three West sectors via “Luftbrücke” with “Candy Bombers”. In East and West Berlin the reconstruction began. The construction of the Berlin Wall on Aug 13, 1961 set the seal on the city’s division and separated its people.

Their arrival and that of other celebrities in love with Berlin’s grittiness, its disrespect for authority, the lack of paparazzi, even its lax smoking laws, is part of a wider trend – creative Americans are discovering Berlin.

The city is increasingly said to have the edge over New York as an international centre of art and creativity that many say America’s cultural capital started to lose 20 years ago, when they began scrubbing the graffiti from the subways.

“Berlin is like New York City in the 1980s,” proclaimed the New York Times. “Rents are cheap, graffiti is everywhere and the air crackles with a creativity that comes only from a city in transition.”

André likes to quote playwright Henrik Ibsen: “To crave for happiness in this world is simply to be possessed by a spirit of revolt.” André believes the root of the problem is that happiness dissolves differences between people, and French intellectuals, or the people who claim they are intellectuals, are afraid of being swallowed up in the mass of office clerks. “If a society places great emphasis on happiness being something anyone can achieve,” he says, “then those people who are always searching for a way to be different can do nothing but criticize and reject this striving toward universal happiness.”

- Why has there been such a strong focus on being happy and living a good and conscious life in recent years?

- The interest in happiness emerged at the same time as the interest in health. Now that Westerners don’t have to worry as much about pure survival, they’re much more interested in the quality of life. But there’s also a long-term trend here. Happiness also is part of democratization. Since the 18th century, everyone has a right to happiness. The American Constitution speaks of the pursuit of happiness.

Nowadays, happiness is a topic addressed by the consumer society. Happiness is everywhere, which of course leads to a deeper interest. This is undoubtedly because the need for meaning is more keenly felt since the role of religion has declined.

- What are the indispensable ingredients for happiness?

- Food and shelter are absolute conditions, of course. I distinguish between poverty and misery such as I have seen in Africa. You can still experience moments of happiness in conditions of poverty, but not in misery: it’s a near-constant wasting away. Human beings are social animals, so our ties to other people are important. And we are children of nature. Many happy moments are experienced in the outdoors. It’s no accident that in Christian heaven, we see our loved ones, friends and family again, and that this takes place in a natural setting of bubbling mountain streams and grassy meadows, the Garden of Eden.

- Has there been progress in happiness? Are we happier than we were 100 years ago?

- The social sciences have been working with indicators of happiness for more than 30 years. All the studies find that people are reporting increasing levels of happiness. On average, Americans are happier than Europeans, and Northern Europeans are happier than Southern Europeans. The West is aging, and the majority of older people say they’re happier than they did in the past. They also understand happiness better, because they understand what is and isn’t important.

There are plenty of objective reasons, too: In the Western world, illness, violence and war determine our chances of happiness less than they did in the past.

And then of course we have drugs to fight depression. Prozac doesn’t make you happy, but it does make you less unhappy. It decreases negative feelings so there’s more room for experiencing happiness. I see that my patients suffer less when they’re given good medication. Now, as an individual you have to work hard for -moments of -happiness. I don’t rule out the possibility that in 20 years there will be other serotonin-based drugs that will take over that function.

What I’m saying isn’t politically correct—society will have to debate the matter, like with fluoride in drinking water—but I don’t think it’s impossible that there will be some kind of happiness pill. I see so many people being eaten up, destroyed, by suffering. Alcohol, drug and domestic-violence statistics are much too high in our society. There are so many problems, so much unhappiness. If pills can change that, I won’t reject it out of hand.

- How can optimism play a role here?

- Optimism is an ingredient for happiness. It’s not the same thing as happiness. There are pessimists who are happy and unhappy people who are optimists. Optimism is the human capacity to anticipate, and it’s stored somewhere in the brain. Spontaneously, I’m a pessimist. If you ask me what the future holds for Africa, I’ll start talking about famine, violence and misery. But if I concentrate, I think, What were things like in Europe 100 years ago? War, unemployment, illness, poverty. Things have changed here now, so why not there?

Optimism gives you the power to try for happiness, and then when you get a little, you understand that trying to be optimistic was worth the trouble. In the end, it’s about making an investment in yourself. The Italian writer Primo Levi survived a concentration camp in spite of his despair, because he believed in life, saw something positive in it, and he held onto that.

- What is the purpose of happiness?

- It has no purpose—only that you’re happy. It gives you a more interesting life. We don’t live for happiness, but life is possible, beautiful and rich because it exists. When we’re happy, we don’t think about tomorrow; we enjoy it here and now. And we’re only able to do that because we know that there could be more suffering tomorrow. Happiness is only possible against the background of death; only we human beings know that we’re going to die, and that in itself is a good reason to strive for happiness.

You could also say, “What is the purpose of life?” Everyone gets to decide that for themselves. But, again, meaning and happiness are not the same thing. A big hero of the Nazi resistance has given a lot of meaning to his life, but that doesn’t mean he’s a happy person. To paraphrase Diderot: Happiness is a state of well being you wish would last forever.”
